AQUÍ is a design-driven placemaking event taking place on June 11, 2018. It welcomes members and allies of the LGBTQ community to collaborate and create a series of site-based posters that, as a reaction to the island's hostile and oppressive political climate, assert the presence of queer identities in physical places and claim a space for them in our built environment. AQUÍ will queer the University of Puerto Rico School of Architecture's spaces through these visual expressions, by giving visibility to non-heteronormative stories and experiences and placing them in key locations that either shift, contest or challenge the building's established meanings. The AQUÍ posters will communicate and they will empower. But most importantly, they will prompt architects—present and future—to validate queerness within architectural design, history and theory, while advocating for Puerto Rican spaces that cater to diversity and inclusion.
