Glitter in the Air
José Nestor Rodríguez
These photographs of “CHIRINGAS” were taken by my friend José Nestor Rodríguez using his Pentax 67 with Kodak Portra 160 film. They were taken on June 15, 2019 and while they too—like the others taken with different cameras—document the event, what I quite like about them is that they act as snapshots of moments of personal friendships: some new and blooming, some old and lasting. “CHIRINGAS” was a workshop and place-based event, a memorial for all the queer spaces that have closed in Old San Juan. More information on the event can be found here.

The event was produced and organized by myself alongside Kleanthis Kyriakou, and supported by the State Historic Preservation Office and the University of Puerto Rico - Río Piedras.
